Tanzania Accuses Dozens of Treason Following a Contentious Election

Tanzania has charged dozens of people with treason following violent unrest over the country’s disputed October 29 election. According to court filings released on Friday, 76 individuals are accused of trying to obstruct the electoral process “to intimidate” authorities in Dar es Salaam. They also face charges of criminal conspiracy.

The charges come amid mounting criticism of the election, which international observers say failed to meet democratic standards. Opposition-led protests and clashes with security forces have shaken several regions, fueling concerns about human rights abuses.

The main opposition party, Chadema, alleges that security forces killed more than 1,000 protesters and secretly disposed of bodies to hide the actual death toll. The government has denied all such claims.

According to official results, President Samia Suluhu Hassan won more than 97% of the vote after key opposition figures, including Chadema’s Tundu Lissu and ACT-Wazalendo’s Luhaga Mpina, were barred from contesting. Rights organizations have reported widespread intimidation, arbitrary arrests, disappearances, and extrajudicial killings during the election period.
