DRC: Goma is Shocked by Joseph Kabila’s Death Sentence

In Goma, the ruling of the military court is very significant. Since January, the AFC/M23 rebel group has controlled the city. Only a few months prior, Kabila had visited Goma to speak with the locals. Residents of Goma are clearly concerned after learning of his death sentence. Many worry that more bloodshed and divisiveness will result from Kabila’s conviction.

“His arrest might make the war situation worse. Alewis Sambuka, a motorcycle taxi driver, told Africanews that if he is indeed collaborating with the M23, they will be upset when he is taken into custody.

Amani Safari, a resident of Goma, is among those who contend that Kabila’s conviction “won’t bring peace.” [The parties] ought to get together and try to come up with a solution. Serious charges involving treason, war crimes, and involvement in an insurgency movement led to the former head of state’s trial and execution.

In response to this sentence, the M23 conveyed a clear message right away. The rebel faction fiercely opposes the conviction. This conviction could aggravate the already precarious political and security situation in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo. According to independent researcher Hubert Masomeko, decisions perceived as unjust or capricious can exacerbate divides in an area plagued by ongoing violent conflict.
