Senegal Criticizes US Sanctions Against an ICC Prosecutor

Senegal has called on the United States to remove sanctions against the International Criminal Court and its officials, expressing solidarity with the court.

The foreign ministry said in a statement that Washington’s penalties were an assault on the court’s independence and the mandate of its staff.

Four ICC personnel two judges and two prosecutors were subject to fresh penalties issued by the State Department on Wednesday for looking into possible war crimes by Israeli and American authorities. Senegalese national Mame Mandiaye Niang, a prosecutor at the ICC, is among those sanctioned.

Niang’s ‘dedication to justice’ has been praised by Senegalese Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, who has also offered his support.

For requesting arrest warrants against the Israeli prime minister and defense minister for alleged war crimes in Gaza last November, the court and chief prosecutor Imran Khan were already sanctioned by the United States. Washington’s actions have hindered the court’s operations and deterred suppliers, contractors, and collaborators.
Israel was allegedly perpetrating genocide in Gaza, according to a ruling by the International Court of Justice.
