After Heavy Weather, South Africa Announces a State of Disaster

Although various provinces have been affected by the snow, intense rains, and strong winds, the Eastern Cape region surrounding the city of Mthatha was the most severely affected. As cleanup efforts continue, the number of people killed by floods in the area is expected to grow to 92. According to officials, among the dead were thirty-one children.
Local media sources state that at least two schoolchildren who were aboard a bus that swept away are among the unconfirmed number of missing people. Authorities have urged locals to report missing persons to help rescuers better understand how many individuals they were still searching for.
A memorial ceremony was held in a school in Mthatha, one of the few that survived, on Thursday, which the province designated as a day of sorrow for the deaths. Heavy rains in one of the poorest provinces in the nation have destroyed houses and infrastructure and disrupted services, leaving almost 4,000 people homeless.
According to the Eastern Cape administration, efforts were being made to restore electricity and water supply.The government can release relief and rehabilitation funds in KwaZulu-Natal, the Eastern Cape, the Western Cape, and the Free State by declaring a national state of disaster.
