Due to Accusations of Corruption, Ghana’s Former Finance Minister was Placed on Interpol’s Red Notice list

On February 12, the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) in Ghana designated Ofori-Atta a wanted person and fugitive from justice after he had fled the nation and “failed to indicate a reasonable time of his return to the jurisdiction.

According to the OSP, it had told Ofori-Atta that he was under suspicion in many corruption investigations and had instructed him to show up for a meeting on a given day. Six days later, the OSP said that Ofori-Atta was no longer on the wanted list since she had contacted them to set a new appointment for May. However, because of his nonattendance, Ghanaian officials have now placed him on Interpol’s Red Notice list, notifying international law enforcement to apprehend him.

He is accused of breaking procurement laws on ambulances and a national cathedral project that has not been completed despite the government spending over 58 million dollars on it. Ofori-Atta, allegedly receiving medical care abroad, has contested the accusations against him and said he has been handled unfairly.

In November 2022, when Ghana’s economy was in collapse and its currency was among the worst in the world, he escaped a legislative attempt to remove him for economic incompetence. Ofori-Atta was in charge of the nation’s debt restructuring after Ghana defaulted on most of its foreign debt the following month.
