The Funeral for Pope Francis will Take Place in Saint Peter’s Basilica on Saturday, April 26

The Pope’s remains will lie in state in the same Basilica for three days before the ceremony. It is anticipated that Catholic devotees would travel from all around the world to honour the first Latin American pope in history.
Pope Francis passed away on Monday at the age of 88 due to irreparable heart disease and a stroke. His health has been precarious for a long time. He had just recovered from a five-week hospital stint for pneumonia when he passed away.
The dean of the College of Cardinals, Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, will preside over the burial ceremony. Numerous world leaders are expected to attend, including Ukraine’s Volodymyr Zelenskyy, Argentina’s President Javier Milei, and US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump.
In November 2024, Francis himself changed the shortened procedure that would be used for the burial rites. Instead of the customary three coffins composed of cypress, lead, and oak, the pope’s remains will be put in a hardwood coffin that has been doubled with a zinc coffin.
The most notable decision Francis made was to be buried at Rome’s St. Mary Major Basilica instead of Saint Peter’s Basilica, where most popes are interred. In the coming weeks, cardinals are anticipated to convene in Rome to choose Francis’ successor. The Sistine Chapel will be the secret location for the conclave.
