Trump and Africa: New Expectations, New Mandate
African nations wishing to cooperate respectfully are congratulating Donald Trump on his recent reelection to the White House. His isolationist goals, however, continue to raise worries, particularly if Republicans take control of both chambers of Congress.
At the core of these ties is the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA), which promotes African exports to the US, but its future is still up in the air.
According to experts, Trump might be more in favor of a bilateral strategy, which would hurt AGOA.
The “Lobito corridor” is one of the competitive infrastructure projects the US and China are starting to link several African nations.
Regarding security, Trump would lessen US military involvement in Africa, where the threat posed by jihadists still exists.
The US’s estimated $4 billion in funding in 2024 and its efforts to combat climate change are also in doubt. Trump’s environmental policy legacy raises concerns over the future of sustainability programs in Africa.
