During a Fight with Ugandan Police, Bobi Wine was Shot in the Leg
Bobi Wine, the leader of the Ugandan opposition, was shot in the leg during a shootout with police outside of Kampala, according to his party, the National Unity Platform, leaving him “seriously injured.” Video footage from the event in Bulindo, Wakiso District, showing fans helping Wine, also known as Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, into a car. Pictures revealed a seeping wound beneath his left knee, though it’s unclear if he was struck by a bullet or a tear gas canister.
Wine, a well-known opposition politician who ran against President Yoweri Museveni in the 2021 presidential election, has frequently engaged in violent altercations with law enforcement. But this is the first time he’s suffered an injury like this. in the moment, he is getting care in a nearby hospital.
Wine’s entourage denounced the event and claimed it was an attempt on his life. Young Ugandans hold Wine, a former performer who became a politician, in high regard. He has encountered several difficulties since going into politics, including as security personnel physically attacking him, harassing him, and preventing rallies from happening. Since assuming office in 1986, Museveni has defied calls to step down, and since Uganda’s independence in 1962, there has never been a peaceful handover of power.
