Election Contesting is Prohibited for Jacob Zuma; IEC Claims This isn’t ‘Personal’

The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) upheld an objection to former Election president Jacob Zuma’s candidacy in the 2018 elections.

It implies that Zuma will not be allowed to run for office in Parliament due to his criminal history. According to IEC chairperson Mosotho Moepya, Zuma’s uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has been advised that he is not eligible to run. Eight candidates, including him, had been objected to.

We all agreed. These are not personal concerns that we handle. It’s a clear-cut legal provision that we must evaluate our objections against. It’s about whether the individual is eligible,” Moepya remarked.

It does not, however, imply that the MK Party is no longer eligible to run in the elections.

“The party retains their eligibility. It’s simply one of the party’s candidates. All candidates and parties who feel wronged by the judgments made by the commission today are obliged to file an appeal with the Electoral Court, or they might choose to do so. They have until April 2; after the court receives those, it will review the cases and render a ruling,” Moepya stated.
