2024’s Top Google Searches Include Copa América, Elections, and More

Do you recall what you were looking for in 2024? Google does. On Tuesday, Google published its yearly “Year in Search,” which summarizes the most popular searches made on its eponymous search engine in 2024. The findings indicate which phrases witnessed the most increase in traffic over the previous year. These terms ranged from the most well-known songs, athletes, and iconic pop-culture moments that people all over the world looked up to, to major news events, particularly international elections.

In 2024, sports, especially cricket and soccer, accounted for the majority of Google’s trending searches. The Copa América was the most searched event worldwide, followed by the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup and the UEFA European Championship. Around the world, news-specific searches were dominated by the U.S. election. Then came questions regarding this year’s Olympic Games and extreme heat.

This year’s top searches in Google’s persons category were for U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, followed by Catherine, Princess of Wales, U.S. Vice President Kamala Harris, and Algerian boxer Imane Khelif, who also topped searches for specific athletes. Among noteworthy people who passed away in 2024, search patterns were dominated by the late Liam Payne, Toby Keith, and O.J. Simpson.

In terms of entertainment, Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” topped TV show trends, while Disney and Pixar’s “Inside Out 2” was the year’s most popular film. Additionally, “Not Like Us” by Kendrick Lamar led music trends.
