Egypt Wants a Political Solution to The Dispute Between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis
Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty stated Thursday that all alternatives must be considered in order to reach a political solution between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. Saudi Arabia, which is fighting in Yemen in support of the internationally recognised government, has been targeted almost daily by Iran-backed Houthis this month, including the kingdom’s bloodiest attack in years on Riyadh’s airport.
Abdelatty emphasised “the necessity of exploring all avenues for reaching political solutions that guarantee a complete withdrawal from the territories occupied recently” during a press conference in which he reiterated his sympathy with Saudi Arabia.
After a years-long peace in Yemen’s civil conflict collapsed in July, the Houthis launched a major attack in September, seizing Yemeni government-held territory along the Red Sea coast. The Houthis also proclaimed a maritime blockade against Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest crude exporter, and began targeting its ships, land, and oil facilities. In retaliation, the Saudi air force has often struck Houthi-controlled regions, including much of impoverished Yemen, where the fighting has displaced over 250,000 people.
