US Refuses Sudan’s de Facto Leader Visa for UN Speech

The United States on Tuesday declined to issue a visa for Sudan’s de facto leader to fly to New York to attend the United Nations General Assembly, sources said. Army General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, whose forces have been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces since 2023, was due to address the gathering on Wednesday.

Washington had tied the awarding of a visa to his support of a 90-day truce, Sudanese and Western officials stated. Al-Burhan has spoken before the assembly before, on two occasions since the war began.

Sudan’s UN envoy has pleaded with the international body to step in saying the member state leader cannot come in person since al-Burhan is banned from travelling to New York. The UN chief Antonio Guterres’ spokeswoman said he was talking to Washington about the “deeply concerned” that the visa was not provided. The withholding of the entry permit “is a violation of the UN’s agreement with the US,” claimed one diplomatic source.
