Former Zambian Minister was Slain in a Post-Election Military Raid
A former Zambian cabinet minister was shot dead during a security raid at opposition leader Brian Mundubile’s home, authorities said Wednesday, just days after President Hakainde Hichilema was re-elected despite opposition charges of irregularities and intimidation.
Mutotwe Kafwaya, 49, was slain during a joint security operation at Mundubile’s apartment the day after the presidential election on August 13. According to police, during the raid, security forces encountered gunfire and resistance from unidentified individuals, to which they returned fire. An unidentified male was killed, and a pistol was recovered.
Authorities eventually revealed that the deceased was Kafwaya, a former cabinet member and opposition parliamentarian. The operation occurred after the election, in which President Hakainde Hichilema received around 60% of the vote, according to the electoral commission.
The raid, according to the authorities, was intended to dismantle a suspected militia that represented “a serious threat to State security”. During the operation, police arrested eleven people, including three former commandos who police said had substantial military experience.
