Zambian Opposition Leader Plans to Dispute Presidential Election Results in Court

Zambia’s opposition leader announced on Wednesday that he will move to court to challenge the presidential election results of August 13, which gave President Hakainde Hichelema a second term in office.

In a statement, Brian Mundubile stated that his campaign discovered “serious irregularities” and contradictions in the conduct, counting, transmission, and proclamation of results. While last week’s voting was mostly peaceful, the opposition claimed its campaign was hampered by intimidation and restrictions, allegations shared by international election observers.

Zambia’s election commission proclaimed Hichilema the winner with around 60% of the vote, compared to 38% for Mundubile. The argument over the findings is taking place amid a rapidly deteriorating security scenario. On election nite, police arrested numerous opposition politicians for allegedly threatening state security.

They have established that Mutotwe Kafwaya, a former cabinet minister and opposition MP, was killed in a security-force raid on Mundubile’s home the day after the vote. The election commission suspended vote-counting for hours due to claims of violence against polling officials and theft of ballot papers.
