Zambia has Resumed Tallying Following the Disruption of the Election Process by Violence

The Electoral Commission has announced that security concerns have been contained, and vote counting has resumed in Zambia following a nationwide suspension due to election-related violence. The initial presidential results are anticipated to be announced at 10:00 p.m. local time, or 2000 GMT.

The suspension was lifted by the Electoral Commission of Zambia following consultations with law enforcement agencies and a review of the security situation. The threat to the electoral process had been contained, according to Commission chairperson Mwangala Zaloumis, who also stated that measures were in place to facilitate the continuation of the tallying process.

On Friday, the commission halted counting in response to allegations of violence by election staff and the theft of marked ballot papers from ballot boxes. President Hakainde Hichilema, who is pursuing a second five-year term, said his campaign is yielding “encouraging results” and encouraged his supporters to remain peaceful and patient.

In the interim, Brian Mundubile, his primary opponent, declared victory in the presidential race and asserted that his alliance had also secured a majority of parliamentary seats. The official results will determine whether Hichilema can secure another term or whether the opposition can force a change of power in the copper-rich country.
