Benin is Rallied by YouTuber IShowSpeed During his Africa Trip
US YouTuber and Twitch star IShowSpeed visited Lagos on Wednesday as part of his ongoing Africa tour, marking both his 21st birthday and a major career milestone as his channel reached 50 million subscribers.
The tour began on December 29 and has taken him through around 15 African countries, drawing large crowds wherever he goes. Recently named the Most Influential Creator of 2025 by Rolling Stone, Forbes estimates his net worth at about $20 million.
In Lagos, IShowSpeed started his visit at the busy Balogun Market on Lagos Island. Surrounded by security, he moved quickly through the crowd, commenting on the local version of English spoken around him. He later visited Freedom Park, where he tried jollof rice for the first time and reacted to its spicy taste. His tour also included a stop at the popular Nike Art Gallery.
Local content creators praised the visit, saying it helps show global audiences a different side of Africa, including its culture, food, and people. The day ended with a roadside celebration as IShowSpeed marked his subscriber milestone with a birthday cake.
Born Darren Jason Watkins Jr. in Cincinnati, IShowSpeed rose to fame through gaming videos before expanding into global travel content. His Africa tour has included wildlife experiences, football matches with local children, and major sporting events across the continent.
