Ahead of Trump-Putin Discussions, a Number of European Countries Stand with Ukraine

Ahead of Friday’s much-anticipated bilateral meeting between Donald Trump and Vladimir Putin in Alaska, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with a number of European leaders on Wednesday and witnessed their solidarity with his cause.
On Wednesday, Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with a number of European leaders, both digitally (with French President Emmanuel Macron and British Leader Keir Starmer) and in person (with German Chancellor Friedrich Merz).
The objective is to present a unified face and remind US President Donald Trump of the need of allowing Ukraine to participate in peace talks with Russia. In a call with Trump that same day, Zelenskyy and the leaders of Europe did just that.
We spoke with the President of the United States of America today about our shared stance. All matters concerning Ukraine must be dealt only with Ukraine. At a news conference with Friedrich Merz in Germany, Zelenskyy stated, “We need to prepare a trilateral format for talks.”
Ukraine has been concerned that it would be left out of the peace discussions between Washington and Moscow and that a peace deal that disregards its views will be imposed. The Ukrainian leader claims that Trump has indicated that Washington is open to setting up a follow-up meeting with Russia that would involve Ukraine.
