In Northwest Nigeria, Women and Children are Abducted by Armed Men

The most recent wave of kidnappings sweeping the northwest Nigerian state of Zamfara has resulted in the abduction of dozens of women and children. On Sunday, armed men brandishing assault rifles broke into the village of Kafin Dawa, allegedly capturing victims by going door-to-door.

Over 50 women, including married women and girls, were captured, according to Hassan Ya’u, a local resident who was able to flee. Another local informed the Daily Trust that “the entire village was gripped by fear as gunshots echoed throughout the operation,” according to the story that 43 individuals had been abducted. Zamfara police have responded by sending more security personnel to the region.

Because of poverty, unemployment, and the proliferation of illegal weaponry, armed gangs known locally as bandits have made northwest Nigeria a hotbed for kidnappings. The number of kidnappings for ransom has increased recently, and schools and villages are often the targets.

This most recent occurrence is reminiscent of prior kidnappings, like as the 2014 Boko Haram attack in Chibok that captured 276 schoolgirls, some of whom are still missing, and the mass abduction of 130 students in Kuriga earlier this year. Similar attacks have resulted in the kidnapping of at least 1,400 children since 2014. Communities have been left feeling insecure and afraid as a result of the tremendous obstacles to efforts to stop these crimes.
