Following the Death of a Hamas leader, the UN calls for a Ceasefire
Farhan Haq, the UN Secretary-General’s deputy spokesperson, stated Friday (October 18) that “the Secretary-General (Antonio Guterres) is interested that this now leads to an immediate cease fire, the immediate and unconditional release of all hostages, and unrestricted humanitarian access to Gaza.”
According to Mr. Tor Wennesland [Editor’s Note: the U.N. special coordinator for the Middle East peace process], we are at a pivotal point in time. The time has come for us to stop the weapons and free the hostages. He urges everyone to have a conversation and come to an agreement. On Thursday, October 17, Benyamin Netanyahu stated that although Israel had “settled its account” with the late Hamas leader, the battle was still ongoing.
Khalil al-Hayya, Sinwar’s deputy in Qatar, led the group’s delegation during multiple rounds of ceasefire talks mediated by the United States, Qatar, and Egypt. “Those prisoners will not return to you before the end of the aggression on Gaza and the withdrawal from Gaza,” he stated.
The hostage families are still torn between cautious optimism and intense terror.
As the area deals with the death of key Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar in a conflict with Israeli forces in Gaza, Lebanon’s Hezbollah militant group announced Friday (Oct. 18) that it is beginning a new phase in its fight against invading Israeli troops.
