Outbreak of Mpox: DR Congo is Overcrowded and Faces Significant Medication Shortages
Overwhelmed hospital workers in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo are struggling to provide proper medical care to several patients at a makeshift Mpox isolation ward. They are facing shortages of medication and overcrowding.
The Mpox virus, which was designated a worldwide public health emergency three weeks ago, has been identified as the cause of these victims’ illnesses.
According to a number of stories over the last two weeks, immunizations to help fight the new form of the virus should be available soon. Felix Tshisekedi, the president of the Congo, has also authorized a $10 million fund to aid in the epidemic response.
It seems that medical professionals in the DRC, the epicenter of this outbreak, will continue to struggle to give patients the quality care they need until all these promises are fulfilled.
For example, within the last three months, 900 patients have been admitted to the town of Kavumu in South Kivu, with health professionals finding it difficult to provide enough support.
The hospital’s director, Dr. Musole Mulamba Muva, stated, “We run out of medicine every day.” He said that the hospital is dealing with a lot of problems and not a lot of money, and that foreign help has drastically dropped, according to Reuters.
