Unbelievable 2,492-carat Diamond Found In Botswana—among The Biggest Ever

One of the biggest diamonds ever found at one of Botswana’s mines has been announced. On Thursday, the diamond will be on public display.

The massive 2,492-carat stone is reportedly the second-biggest mined stone ever, according to the Botswana government.

The “exceptional” rough diamond was recovered from the Karowe Mine in Botswana, according to a statement released by the Canadian mining company Lucara Diamond Corp. on Wednesday. It was found whole and Lucara described it as a “high-quality” stone. Utilizing X-ray technology, it was located.

“We are thrilled that this amazing 2,492-carat diamond has been found,” William Lamb, president and CEO of Lucara, stated in a statement.

With its weight, it would become the biggest diamond discovered in nearly a century and the second-largest diamond ever extracted from a mine, following the discovery of the Cullinan Diamond in South Africa in 1905. 3,106 carats of the Cullinan were cut into gems, some of which are included in the British Crown Jewels.

A larger black diamond was thought to have been fragmented by a meteorite when it was recovered above ground in Brazil in the late 1800s.
