As Kenyan Police Prowl The Streets, The Head Of A Haitian Gang Requests Communication
On Friday, Kenyan police personnel were observed on patrol outside the US embassy in Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti.
As they grinned at individuals asking inquiries while donning their typical suit of body armor, helmets, and automatic guns, one officer retorted, “We are here to bring peace, of course, not to fight.”
Nearly two years after the unstable Caribbean nation desperately sought assistance to stem an upsurge in gang violence, Kenyan police officers represent the first deployment of foreign law enforcement officials supported by the United Nations to arrive in Haiti.
Jimmy Cherizier, a former elite police officer and current leader of the formidable gang federation known as G9 Family and Allies, set up a microphone for an unscheduled press conference in the street not far from the embassy.
Barbecue, whose real name is Cherizier, took aim at Prime Minister Garry Connille, saying that he had not initiated communication with the G9 Family and the coalition he leads.
“Let’s focus on the solution; the real solution is a national dialogue where every Haitian without discrimination has the right to speak,” he stated.
